The First World War, also known as the Great War,  was a world war, located primarily in Europe, which began on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918. Until the beginning of World War II this war was called the Great War or just World War.  in the United States originally named as European war.  More than 9 million combatants were killed, an unusually high figure, given the technological and industrial sophistication of the belligerents, with its consequent tactical stalemate. He is considered the fifth most deadly conflict in the history of mankind.  This was the seizure that led to war, which paved the way to major political changes, including numerous revolutions with a character never before seen in several of the nations involved.

In war were involved all major industrial and military powers of the time,  divided into two opposing alliances. On the one hand the Triple Alliance was formed by the Central Powers: German Empire and Austria-Hungary. Italy, who had been a member of the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary did not join the Central Powers, for Austria, against the agreed terms, was the aggressor nation that triggered the conflict. On the other side was the Triple Entente, consisting of the United Kingdom, France and the Russian Empire. Both alliances were unchanged and were several nations that would eventually entering the ranks of one side or the other as the war progressed: Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States joined the Triple Entente, while the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria joined the Central Powers (Triple Alliance). In total, more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilized and fought in the greatest war in history.

Although imperialism that had been developing for decades the powers involved was the main underlying cause, the trigger of the conflict took place on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.  His executioner was Gavrilo Princip a young Serbian nationalist.  This incident triggered a diplomatic crisis when Austria-Hungary issued an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia and the various international partnerships forged over the past decades were invoked. Within weeks, all the major European powers were at war and the conflict spread worldwide.

On July 28, the Austro-Hungarians began the hostilities with the attempted invasion of Serbia.k  While Russia mobilized, Germany invaded Belgium, which had been declared neutral, and Luxembourg on their way to France. The violation of Belgian sovereignty took Britain to declare war on Germany. The Germans were detained by the French a few miles from Paris, beginning a war of attrition in which the lines of trenches just suffer any change until 1917. This front is known as the Western Front. On the Eastern Front, the Russian army achieved several victories against the Austro-Hungarians, but were arrested by the Germans in their attempt to invade East Prussia. In November 1914, the Ottoman Empire entered the war, which meant opening different fronts in the Caucasus, Mesopotamia and the Sinai. Italy and Bulgaria joined the war in 1915, Romania in 1916 and the U.S. in 1917.
